For some, composition by improvisation can become addictive. Hours can be spent creating & recording. Then there is the wonder of finding gems among all that noise. Jamming towards an uncertain future, it is left to each musician's own devices as to where the music will flow.

In the Time of Max (ambient)

This set of instrumentals are from a period of transition for Short-term Memory. Jon and Rob wanting to keep moving in an instrumental music direction while Jim and Max wanted to take it in a more psychedelic pop direction, songs with vocals. Before that happened, October 1 & 2 were conceived in our typical way, by Jamming. Shortly after recording these 2 songs the band decided to take a break.

During this hiatus, Max and Jim decided to get together and have an afternoon Jam. Wave Patterns and Ascension were the results. Wave Patterns was used as the music for the short film by Peter Von Ziegesar, Wheels / Trails.

Jam Science Kansas City, Missouri

A lo-fi digital box set, this website, hosted by Jim Skeel, celebrates collaboration through improvisation.
Jam Science is not a band but 4 compilations of instrumental music by musicians who wrote and performed these tunes while “jamming”. Each group of compositions features a different type of music. There is no leader here, just a quixotic adventure of sound & rhythm.
